Parkdale Deanery Marches for HIV AIDS

IMG_1278

Mary Lou Harrison spends much of her time as Parish Assistant at St. Anne’s – but she also is an active volunteer and has persuaded another Parkdale Parish to get on the move. Here’s her message:

“We’re halfway there! The Marchers from the Parish of St. Mary Magdalene have raised $1,000 of their $2,000 goal in support of the life-saving work of Latinos Positivos. Thanks to everyone who has sponsored the team thus far. Your support is greatly appreciated!

This Saturday, April 27th, walkers from St. Mary Magdalene’s will be participating in Rotary’s Trump AIDS Poker Walk in the Toronto Beach, and they would love your support. Donations can be made online via credit card You can also contact me as  the team’s captain, at rotarianmarylou@gmail.com to let me know the amount of your pledge. I’ll follow up after the walk to receive your donation via cash or cheque. Cheques are made payable to the Rotary Club of Belleville, and tax receipts will be issued for all donations of $20 or more.

Funds raised by the Marchers will help Latinos Positivos to hold a leadership development and strategic planning retreat this spring for the 10 members of their POZ Prevention Team, all of whom are volunteers and face their own HIV/AIDS-related challenges. Funds raised at the walk will also increase the diagnostic capabilities of the HIV/AIDS Clinic of the Ongutoi Health Centre in Uganda, a Rotary project.”

All Parkdale parishioners are encouraged to join in.  It’s a great cause, fun to join as a walker and very worthwhile to be a supporter to help those challenged by HIV both here in Canada and abroad.

Meditation – 30 March

Emptiness

Love the emptiness. If you do not have space in your soul – if you keep yourself filled on food or constant activity or ever-new ideas– your desire will be blunted or even perverted. We have been created with the gift of desire, to long for, to anticipate.

Meditation – 28 March

Revelation

Take up these symbols of the new life: towel and basin and water. Let them be for you a sign of your love for him and your gratitude for all that he has done for you. Let them be for you a pledge of your commitment to serve – not out of duty, but out of love; not to obtain a reward, but to imitate the One who freely and willingly laid down his life for you. Let them be for you a reminder of your true vocation.

– Br. David Vryhof
Society of Saint John the Evangelist

Meditation – 27 March

Paradox

There is something about our suffering in life – what we would not have chosen but cannot avoid – when we say “yes” to God, when we show ourselves ready to bear our suffering before God, that opens the door for transformation, for consecration. There is something about facing the dark night that allows us to see the dawning of joy.

– Br. Curtis Almquist

Meditation – 26 March

Experience

We lift our hearts to God in whatever state they are in. If our hearts are happy, we lift them to the Lord. If our hearts are broken or heavy with grief, we lift them to the Lord. If our hearts are anxious or afraid, we lift them to the Lord. We “come as we are” to this place.

– Br. Mark Brown
Society of Saint John the Evangelist

Meditation – 25 March

Compassion

During this week, these last days of our Lord’s life, we try to enter imaginatively into the story of Christ’s passion, to try, each one of us, to feel the weight of the cross, to understand a little of the immensity of God’s sacrifice for us, and the immensity of God’s love for us.

– Br. Geoffrey Tristram

Meditation – 24 March

Vulnerability

What is it that makes you vulnerable? In our lifetimes, we don’t lose our spiritual vulnerability. We wouldn’t want to lose it. How we come to know God, how God breaks through to us, is probably through something that is broken in our lives.
